Arizona Needs Leaders Who Uphold Democratic Values
Born to World War II veterans who risked their lives to safeguard democracy, I learned from an early age that true leadership is rooted in service and integrity.
At 19, I enlisted to serve in Vietnam, driven by the desire to protect the democratic principles that fortify America—principles such as fair elections, the rule of law, and the defense of freedoms.
Regrettably, Kari Lake does not embrace these values. Her actions and words indicate a dangerous alignment with authoritarian figures and the promotion of conspiracy theories that threaten the core of our democracy.
Lake has defended Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, criticizing journalists for challenging him and claiming he is “interested in talking peace” amid his aggression in Ukraine. She has also lauded Hungarian leader Viktor Orban, calling him the “GREATEST” in Europe and praising his policies, despite Hungary experiencing a decline in democratic freedoms under Orban’s rule.
Moreover, Lake’s anti-democratic stance extends to her defense of those involved in the January 6th insurrection, which she labeled a “peaceful protest.” She has propagated unfounded conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and continues to claim she is the “duly elected Governor of Arizona” despite her loss in 2022.
These actions suggest a troubling trend: Kari Lake is prepared to undermine democratic values and align with those who oppose them. Arizona deserves leaders committed to upholding democracy and rejecting authoritarianism in all its forms.
We must steadfastly adhere to the principles that make our nation strong and reject those who seek to erode them. Kari Lake has demonstrated she is not that leader.
