Texas Pastor Advocates for Christian Nationalist Governance

Texas pastor Joel Webbon, known for his radical Christian nationalist views, has openly expressed his belief that American society is too morally degenerate, unintelligent, and timid to adhere to the Constitution. He asserts that a Christian dictator should govern the nation, enforcing a strict theocracy where everyone is compelled to at least “pretend to be Christian.”

Webbon envisions a society where the Apostles’ Creed is embedded in the Constitution, and various practices such as abortion, pornography, no-fault divorce, in vitro fertilization, and birth control are banned. He also advocates for women to be stripped of their voting rights and non-Christians to be excluded from his neighborhood and relegated to second-class citizenship.

In a recent episode of his “Theology Applied” program, Webbon detailed his ideal Christian America, where not just non-Christians, but also non-Protestant Christians, particularly Catholics, would be treated as second-class citizens.

“At the civil level, it needs to be a pan-Protestant project,” Webbon explained, emphasizing his desire to see the Constitution amended to include the Apostle’s Creed and the Ten Commandments. He further stated that the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation should be adopted as official government policy.

“That’s what gets you not just a pan-Christian but a pan-Protestant project that’s distinctly Protestant,” Webbon said. “Hey, you’re welcome to be a part of this, but this is Protestant and we’re not going to abandon the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So, this is what we’re doing. You’re welcome to participate, but we’re going in this direction and you can be on in the car, but you don’t get to drive. The Protestants are driving.

In 2023, Webbon contributed to a document titled “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel.” This document, drafted by figures like Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers and former Trump administration official William Wolfe, calls for the United States to formally “acknowledge the Lordship of Christ” in all its laws, abolish abortion, outlaw marriage equality, and reclaim national sovereignty from “godless, global entities.”

Webbon, who serves as a pastor at Covenant Bible Church in Texas, is also the founder of Right Response Ministries. He organizes events such as the upcoming “Christ Is King: How To Defeat Trashworld” conference, featuring several right-wing Christian nationalist activists including Deevers, Steve Deace, Stephen Wolfe, Auron MacIntyre, and Andrew Isker.
