Jim Desmond Partners with Controversial Mayor in Congressional Campaign

Republican Congressional candidate Jim Desmond has joined forces with Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander, a figure known for her contentious remarks on COVID mask mandates and LGBTQ issues. Desmond expressed gratitude in a Facebook post dated July 12, where he acknowledged Alexander’s participation in a door-knocking event supporting his campaign. He praised her for her “leadership and commitment to our community.”

Jessica Alexander, who was serving on the Temecula City Council in 2021, made headlines when she drew a parallel between her refusal to wear a COVID face mask and Rosa Parks’ historic act of defiance against racial segregation. During a town council meeting, Alexander remarked, “[Parks] finally took a stand and moved to the front. I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus. I’m telling you, I feel like I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus!” Her comments quickly went viral, triggering widespread outrage and demands for her resignation, though she stood by her statement.

In a more recent incident, Alexander sparked further controversy during a council meeting when she reacted to a proclamation acknowledging June as LGBTQ Pride Month. She suggested that “MAPS [Minor Attracted Persons] will eventually be recognized under this flag,” referring to the LGBTQ pride flag. She further claimed that the plus sign in LGBTQ+ could represent pedophiles and individuals involved in bestiality.

In Temecula, the mayor is not directly elected by the public. Instead, city council members select one of their peers to serve a one-year term as mayor. Jessica Alexander’s current term is set to conclude on January 1, 2027.

Jim Desmond is vying for a Congressional seat in California’s 48th District, with his opponent being Marni von Wilpert, a member of the San Diego City Council.
