Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Gaza, Casualties Mount
Early Tuesday, Israel carried out a series of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, resulting in significant casualties, as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry. The strikes, which ended a ceasefire that had been in effect since January, left hundreds dead, including women and children, and raised concerns about the escalation of the 17-month-long conflict.
The White House confirmed it was informed about the operation and expressed support for Israel’s decision.
Key Details:
- Casualties: According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 404 individuals lost their lives in the airstrikes, with over 560 injured. Rescuers continue to search through the debris. This incident ranks among the deadliest since the conflict began, which has claimed over 48,000 Palestinian lives and displaced approximately 90% of Gaza’s inhabitants.
- Israel’s Justification: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes were conducted due to stalled negotiations regarding the ceasefire extension. The Israeli military has advised evacuations in northern and eastern Gaza, suggesting the possibility of forthcoming ground operations.
- Response from Hamas: The militant organization has yet to retaliate militarily but accused Netanyahu of disrupting the ceasefire, which they claim puts Israeli hostages at risk of “an unknown fate.” Hamas reportedly holds 24 Israeli hostages alive, in addition to the remains of 35 others.
