Sheriff’s Campaigning with Mississippi Senator Under Scrutiny

Sheriff Bryan Bailey, who has been at the center of allegations involving severe police misconduct, is currently campaigning alongside Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. This partnership has drawn significant attention due to the controversies surrounding Bailey’s department.

On March 7, Hyde-Smith and Bailey were seen together at a political breakfast in Rankin County. Hyde-Smith is in the midst of her campaign for a second term in the Senate.

In an incident that has sparked widespread outrage, five officers from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office reportedly entered a home in January 2023 without a warrant. The officers allegedly tortured two Black men inside, employing methods such as taser shocks, beatings with a wooden plank, and forcing a sex toy down their throats. One of the victims was shot in the mouth, resulting in a shattered jawbone. Racial slurs were reportedly used during the attack.

The officers have since pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including hate crimes. However, this case is not seen as an isolated event by many Rankin County residents. The New York Times highlighted that numerous locals, predominantly from poor or Black communities, have reported similar experiences of police violence. Allegations include taser abuse, physical assaults, and threats of sexual violence.

These officers, allegedly part of a group dubbed “The Goon Squad,” have brought the sheriff’s department under intense scrutiny.

Bailey has expressed his shock over these revelations, stating he was unaware of such misconduct, despite claims from residents that they reported these issues to his office. “I have 240 employees, there’s no way I can be with them each and every day,” Bailey mentioned to The New York Times.

Senator Hyde-Smith has not commented on the January incident or the subsequent legal proceedings. She has previously faced criticism for opposing a bipartisan police reform bill and making racially insensitive remarks.

Bailey’s track record has other blemishes. In 2016, he was accused by a district attorney of illegally obtaining a subpoena to access his ex-girlfriend’s phone and text records, though no charges were pursued. Additionally, local officials were suspected of covering up the investigation.

Recent allegations against Bailey include claims by inmates at the Rankin County jail that he used them for manual labor at his mother’s chicken ranch, with some receiving cash or meals as compensation, while others were not compensated at all. Bailey has also faced accusations of misusing county funds for personal farm equipment and using county machinery for his farm operations.

As Hyde-Smith campaigns for re-election, her Democratic opponent, Scott Colm, a local district attorney, has been noted for his role in prosecuting cases of corruption, including a sheriff’s office involved in the sexual exploitation of inmates in 2024.
