Georgia Rep. Collins Faces Scrutiny Over Crypto Trades Amid Stock Ban Support

Georgia Representative Mike Collins has recently come under scrutiny for his involvement in cryptocurrency trading while advocating for a prohibition on congressional stock trading. This revelation emerged after a voter questioned him during a meet-and-greet event in April, where Collins attempted to justify his actions by suggesting that cryptocurrencies could not be manipulated in the same way traditional stocks are.

“I don’t know how you would manipulate crypto,” Collins stated. “It’d be like trying to manipulate the dollar, the peso or something. But the stock trading, I don’t know how to do it … All I want to know is when people stop doing it. They’re getting insider information.”

Despite Collins’ assertion, his understanding of the situation appears to be flawed. Although cryptocurrencies operate on digital platforms distinct from the stock market, individuals can still exploit non-public information to enhance their gains. These activities may not fall under typical insider trading laws but can be addressed through wire or commodities fraud charges.

In a related incident in 2021, North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn faced a $14,000 penalty from the House Ethics Committee for promoting a cryptocurrency in which he had a substantial interest. This highlights the complexities surrounding cryptocurrency dealings by public officials.

Collins has expressed support for various proposed restrictions on congressional stock trading, many of which would encompass cryptocurrencies. His stance, however, has not shielded him from criticism. After securing the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Georgia, his former primary rival, Derek Dooley, criticized him for his crypto investments. Dooley’s campaign alleged on X that “Collins treats Congress like his own crypto casino,” suggesting that citizens deserve leaders committed to public service rather than personal gain.

This narrative is expected to persist into the general election, as Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, who is running for re-election, has prioritized combating political corruption and personal profiteering. Additionally, President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Collins, has been criticized for profiting $1.4 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency enterprise, as reported by The New York Times.

In the political landscape, a recent Fox News poll reveals that Ossoff is leading Collins by 13 points among likely voters, indicating a challenging path ahead for Collins in the upcoming election.
