Former Reagan Official Turns Democrat to Challenge Arizona’s Republican Stronghold
Deborah Howard, once a Republican serving in the Reagan administration, is now running for office as a Democrat. Her shift in political allegiance stems from a desire to counter Donald Trump and help Democrats gain control of the Arizona state legislature.
Howard’s extensive experience in communications, including roles at Ronald Reagan’s Department of Labor and the American Association of Retired People (AARP), equips her for this political battle. Her commitment deepened while volunteering in Maricopa County, where she led voter registration and redistricting efforts. Discontent with state Republicans ignoring majority opinions on critical issues like abortion rights, school vouchers, and taxes fueled her decision.
“Arizona voters twice told the state legislature they didn’t want universal school vouchers,” Howard remarked, criticizing the legislative majority’s indifference. Additionally, she noted the legislature’s evasion of Prop 208, a wealth tax intended to support public education, which led to a significant budget deficit.
Her critical view extends to her district, Arizona’s 27th Legislative District, represented by election deniers including Anthony Kern, a participant in the January 6 events. Howard advocates for a government that truly listens to voters, aligning with several Democratic candidates in her mission.
The Importance of Service and Volunteerism
Howard attributes her dedication to public service to family values and her tenure at AARP, stating, “Volunteerism is a huge component of our American heritage.” Her resilience shows in her life choices, such as joining the Peace Corps after personal tragedy and facing health challenges.
Voter Concerns: Abortion and Education
Howard identifies abortion access and education as top voter concerns. Heart-wrenching stories from residents emphasize the impact of restrictive laws, such as the 1864 ban, on health and family planning. Howard advocates for embedding reproductive rights in the Arizona state constitution.
On education, Howard aims to tackle Arizona’s low per-pupil funding by supporting a pro-education majority, promising restored funding, and more affordable education options post-high school.
Addressing Arizona’s Housing Crisis
Howard is also focused on affordable housing solutions, noting the high cost of homeownership in Arizona. She proposes collaboration with various government levels to ensure affordable housing for first-time buyers and protections for renters.
Howard’s Unique Position
Howard differentiates herself from Republican opponents by supporting reproductive rights, advocating for fully funded public education, and promoting clean energy initiatives. She highlights Arizona’s untapped potential in solar energy, stressing that policy choices at the polls will shape the state’s future.
Despite the district’s Republican leanings, Howard views recent election results as promising. She encourages bipartisan support, telling Republicans, “You could vote for your favorite Republican and [pointing to herself] vote for your favorite Democrat.”
