Florida Man Arrested for Alleged Involvement in Capitol Riots

WASHINGTON — A Florida resident has been taken into custody for allegedly engaging in violent activities against law enforcement during the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. The incident disrupted a joint session of Congress tasked with certifying the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.

Jeremy Michael Miller, 45, faces a criminal complaint in the District of Columbia. He is charged with multiple felonies, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder.

In addition to these felonies, Miller faces misdemeanor charges of entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted area, engaging in physical violence in a restricted location, and committing an act of physical violence in the Capitol building or grounds.

The FBI detained Miller on October 23, 2024, in Florida, where he made his initial appearance in the Middle District of Florida.

Court documents reveal that Miller was identified in video footage from January 6, 2021, at the Lower West Plaza of the Capitol grounds. He is accused of clashing with police at metal bike rack barricades. The documents allege that Miller attempted to pull a bike rack away from police, who quickly reestablished their line. At approximately 1:56 p.m., video footage allegedly shows Miller linking arms with other rioters in an attempt to breach the police line, which they failed to do.

Separated from police, Miller allegedly picked up a pole around 2:16 p.m. and threw it at officers on the other side of the barricade. Video footage later shows the collapse of the police line on the Lower West Plaza, allowing Miller and others to move closer to the Capitol.

By 4:20 p.m., Miller had reportedly reached the Upper West Terrace of the building, where he and other rioters violently resisted police efforts to contain the crowd. Miller is accused of pushing against a police riot shield and attempting to seize it from an officer, retreating after several unsuccessful attempts.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with help from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

The FBI’s Tampa and Washington Field Offices are leading the investigation, with significant assistance from the United States Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

Since January 6, 2021, over 1,532 individuals from nearly all 50 states have been charged for their roles in the Capitol breach. This includes more than 571 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement officers, a felony offense. The investigation is ongoing.

A complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
