An FBI investigation took place at the main election office in Fulton County, Georgia, on Wednesday, as agents searched for 2020 election records. This office has been a focal point in conspiracy theories surrounding former President Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud. The action comes shortly after Trump predicted prosecutions related to what he described as a flawed election process.

Investigation Details

The search involved FBI agents securing the area around the election hub in Union City with yellow tape and removing boxes from the facility. These boxes, according to FBI spokesperson Jenna Sellitto, contained ballots. The agents sought various election materials, including ballots, tabulator tapes, electronic ballot images, and voter rolls. An FBI spokesperson stated that the agents were carrying out a “court authorized law enforcement action,” though further details were withheld due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Reactions from local officials were mixed, with Democratic leaders expressing concern over the FBI’s actions. Robb Pitts, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, stated, “We don’t know why they took them, and we don’t know where they’re taking them to.” FBI Co-Deputy Director Andrew Bailey and U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard were among those seen at the site.

Trump’s Allegations and Legal Challenges

Donald Trump has consistently targeted Fulton County, Georgia’s largest county, as emblematic of his grievances about the 2020 election. Despite repeated assurances from courts and his own attorney general that no significant fraud occurred, Trump maintains that the election was stolen. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis had previously indicted Trump and 18 others for attempting to overturn the election results, although that case was dismissed due to perceived conflicts of interest.

Ongoing Legal Efforts

In related matters, the Justice Department recently sued the clerk of the Fulton County courts for access to 2020 election documents. This lawsuit follows a failed effort to obtain the documents via a letter sent to clerk Che Alexander. The department’s lawsuit argues that the refusal to provide these records violates the Civil Rights Act, and seeks a court order to compel their release.

A conservative majority on the State Election Board has actively pursued reopening cases related to alleged 2020 election misconduct in Fulton County. They have attempted to subpoena various election documents, though these efforts are currently entangled in legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department’s request for election records from the county election board, citing the federal Civil Rights Act, has also been met with resistance. Lawyers for the board indicated that the records are sealed under state law and require a court order for release. The department’s legal actions continue as they seek a resolution.
