As conflicts unfold worldwide, experts are warning veterans and the public to approach war-related content on social media with caution. Analysts say online platforms increasingly prioritize engagement over accuracy, flooding feeds with both real and digitally manipulated material—including AI-generated videos depicting hypothetical attacks on the United States.
Social media users are often exposed to dramatic visuals and charts that, while eye-catching, may lack meaningful context. One example involved a graph showing the number of nuclear weapons owned by different countries. The same visual template has been repurposed for unrelated topics, such as illustrating how animals sleep, demonstrating how digital tools are used to capitalize on trending news.
False Context and Viral Hoaxes
A common tactic, known as false connection, pairs authentic photos or videos with misleading captions to create alarm. Images of military vehicles—humvees and transport trucks—on flatbed rail cars have circulated online with claims of impending martial law or domestic crackdowns. These convoys are part of routine logistics, transporting equipment to training sites or ports.
Similarly, old or unrelated footage is frequently repurposed. Viral clips claiming Thai airstrikes on Cambodia were actually from joint drills with Indonesia, while videos labeled as Cambodian protests were taken during football matches in Indonesia. Photos and videos from last year or unrelated locations are routinely reframed to look like breaking news. Misleading captions can make authentic material appear false or threatening.
False attribution is another tactic, linking quotes or actions to public figures or groups without basis in fact. Memes may attribute offensive statements to athletes or politicians even when no credible source confirms the claim. Verification methods include checking for a source, cross-referencing reputable outlets, and reverse-searching images.
Hoaxes also resurface over time. A fabricated newspaper clipping about Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, originally created with a free online tool, went viral again on TikTok. The viral post features what appears to be a newspaper clipping containing a sensational and disturbing claim. But the image isn’t from a real newspaper. According to digital media analysts, it was created using a free online tool that generates fake newspaper layouts.
Fake Local News and “Pink Slime” Sites
As traditional newspapers decline, deceptive websites mimicking local news—sometimes called “pink slime” sites—have become more common. These outlets often have innocuous names like The Boston Times or The Miami Chronicle, but many are funded by partisan groups or foreign actors. AI-generated articles make it difficult to distinguish them from legitimate sources, leaving readers vulnerable to misinformation. Veterans are encouraged to rely on trusted local news outlets and verify unfamiliar sites before sharing or acting on information.
AI and Video Manipulation
Artificial intelligence has increased the sophistication of misinformation. AI-generated images have been used to depict U.S. immigration officers detaining children or military deportations. In many cases, visuals are entirely fabricated or repurposed from unrelated events, yet they provoke strong emotional reactions.
Videos have also been altered to misrepresent public figures. A clip suggesting Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Elon Musk to cut off Ukrainian Starlink access was confirmed as a manipulated “cheapfake.” Simple edits, splicing, or mismatched audio can mislead viewers without advanced AI, creating plausible yet false narratives.
Influencers, Rage Bait, and the Business of Misinformation
Misinformation spreads quickly because social media prioritizes engagement over accuracy. Viral content often exploits fear or outrage, a tactic known as “rage bait.” Influencers and media personalities profit from high-engagement posts, amplifying falsehoods and polarizing audiences.
A Pew Research Center report found that 21% of U.S. adults rely on social media influencers for information, rising to 37% among adults under 30, but at the same time, A UNESCO study found that 42% of those content creators judge credibility by popularity rather than factual accuracy. That means a large portion of Americans are getting bad information from influencers who care more about clicks than accuracy. Veterans, who are accustomed to evaluating intelligence carefully, are encouraged to apply the same scrutiny to online information.
Global Disinformation Campaigns
Social media allows misinformation to spread internationally. Posts by U.S. veterans have been amplified by foreign actors to justify political actions abroad. In one case, a veteran’s tweet about U.S. biolabs in Ukraine was used by Russian and Chinese outlets during the early COVID-19 pandemic.
Russian-operated bots have also attempted to influence American users directly. Fake accounts targeted veterans in Texas with posts promoting state secession, while the Justice Department uncovered AI-powered accounts spreading pro-Kremlin propaganda ahead of U.S. elections. Experts warn that veterans’ trust and civic engagement can be exploited by these campaigns.
Protecting Truth in the Digital Age
Digital literacy is increasingly viewed as a form of situational awareness. Tools like reverse image searches, NewsGuard, and MediaWise can help verify content and identify manipulation. Checking dates, consulting multiple reputable sources, and pausing before sharing are essential for ensuring information is accurate and contextualized.
Veterans are encouraged to bring the same critical thinking to social media that they applied in high-stakes decision-making during service. In an era where digital content is easily manipulated, verifying the source and context of images, videos, and claims is essential for protecting both personal and public trust.
