Record-Breaking Crowd Witnesses NWSL Match in Denver
The Denver Summit’s recent match against the Washington Spirit set a new record for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with an audience of 63,004. This event at the Denver Broncos’ stadium surpassed the previous attendance milestone of 40,091, achieved during Bay FC’s contest against the Spirit last season at San Francisco Giants’ Oracle Park.
In another notable turnout, the Chicago Stars attracted 35,038 spectators to their 2024 match against Bay FC, hosted at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs’ home ground.
“This is a big deal, and it’s very important,” remarked fan Karmryn Eversole. “And I think it’s a huge milestone for women’s sports to prove that we want more women’s courts. And this is what we want, and we’re here supporting it, and we want to show it.”
The game on Saturday marked the Summit’s inaugural home match in Colorado, following a series of three away games where they recorded a 1-1-1 result. The encounter with the Spirit concluded in a goalless draw.
Denver secured the 16th NWSL franchise in January 2025, reportedly for an expansion fee of $110 million. This season, the Summit commenced play alongside the Boston Legacy.
“I mean, I think it means everything,” said fan Nicole DeLue. “If you look at the amount of Denver women’s players that have gone to the World Cup, made the national team. We’ve always been a strong feeder. So to finally have a home base here is just incredible.”
Following the opener at Mile High, the Summit will host matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, the venue for MLS’s Colorado Rapids. In July, they will transition to the temporary 12,000-seat Centennial Stadium as preparations continue for a dedicated women’s soccer stadium in downtown Denver.
The Summit recently finalized the acquisition of land at Santa Fe Yards for the upcoming stadium, anticipated to be ready by the 2028 season.
