Incident in Cuban Waters: Four Killed on Florida-Registered Boat

A confrontation in Cuban waters resulted in the deaths of four individuals aboard a speedboat with Florida registration, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Cuban government. The incident occurred approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) northeast of Cayo Falcones, near Cuba’s northern coast.

The specifics surrounding the event remain scarce, including whether any U.S. citizens were present on the vessel. The Cuban Interior Ministry provided the boat’s registration number; however, The Associated Press noted the difficulty in verifying these details due to the non-public nature of boat registrations in Florida.

During the altercation, one Cuban officer sustained injuries, in addition to the four fatalities and six wounded individuals aboard the boat. The reasons for the boat’s presence in Cuban waters are yet to be clarified.

Cuba’s Interior Ministry emphasized in their statement that the government was committed to “safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region.”

U.S. Vice President JD Vance, having been briefed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stated that the White House is keeping a close watch on the developments but refrained from providing further insights. “Hopefully it’s not as bad as we fear it could be,” Vance remarked.

Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, announced an investigation involving federal, state, and law enforcement agencies. He expressed skepticism towards the Cuban government, stating on X, “The Cuban government cannot be trusted, and we will do everything in our power to hold these communists accountable.”

In response to the incident, Florida Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez criticized the actions of the Cuban government, labeling the deaths as murder and advocating for the regime’s downfall by writing on X, “This regime must be relegated to the dust bin of history!”

Although encounters between Cuba’s Coast Guard and U.S.-registered speedboats in Cuban waters are not uncommon, recent reports of such violent escalations have been absent. Historically, these boats have been involved in transporting unidentified goods to Cuba or attempting to smuggle Cubans into the United States.

Requests for comments from the U.S. Coast Guard went unanswered, and inquiries were redirected by the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to the U.S. Department of State, which has yet to respond.

This incident unfolds amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Cuba, a situation exacerbated by policies from the Trump administration. The two nations previously collaborated on combating drug smuggling and other criminal activities, although this cooperation has ceased.
