Spire Motorsports Welcomes Chris Gabehart Amid Legal Dispute
In a significant development within NASCAR circles, Chris Gabehart has made his first appearance as an employee of Spire Motorsports at the IndyCar race in St. Petersburg, Florida. This comes as legal discussions continue around his departure from Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), a team he had been with for 13 years.
The legal battle stems from Gabehart’s departure from JGR where he served as the competition director. Gabehart’s move to Spire as their chief motorsports officer has been contested by JGR, leading to a lawsuit. Joe Gibbs Racing is seeking a restraining order to prevent Gabehart from assuming his new role, alleging that he took proprietary information to Spire.
“With all the momentum the sport currently has, coming off everything in the offseason, I think this is a very unfortunate spot for the sport to be in, in the public light,” Gabehart stated. “This is something that could have been taken care of behind closed doors. I can respect the fact that we are working our way through it and will continue to do so as long as it takes.”
The dispute escalated when negotiations over Gabehart’s separation turned contentious. On Friday, a federal judge insisted on continuing talks, warning that a ruling about Gabehart’s employment with Spire would be made on Monday if a resolution is not reached.
Gabehart’s New Role at Spire
At the heart of the dispute is the nature of Gabehart’s new role. Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson emphasized that Gabehart’s position is not a lateral move from his previous job at JGR. “I think it’s insulting to say that it’s the same role, because it’s not the same role,” Dickerson stated. Gabehart will have significant responsibilities across TWG Motorsports’ various operations, not just NASCAR.
Founded by Joe Gibbs in 1992, JGR has been a prominent team in NASCAR, fielding cars for notable drivers like Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, Ty Gibbs, and Denny Hamlin. Gabehart’s career at JGR began in 2012, progressing from engineer to crew chief for Hamlin, and eventually competition director.
Impact on Ty Gibbs
The lawsuit has inadvertently drawn attention to Ty Gibbs, Joe Gibbs’ grandson. Gabehart expressed regret over the situation, saying, “I understand the public narrative that has come along with the things that I’ve been forced to say in public. But those have nothing to do with this.” He underlined that the dispute is not personal against Ty or the Gibbs family.
Ty Gibbs, who has had a successful run in NASCAR’s second-level series, moved to the Cup Series in 2023. Despite his achievements, including a 2022 championship win, Ty’s transition to the Cup Series has been challenging, with a 15th place finish in the 2024 standings marking his career best so far.
