Carrie Buck’s Congressional Campaign Sparks Debate Over Drug Pricing Stance

Carrie Buck, a Republican contender aiming for a congressional seat in Nevada, is at the center of a heated discussion on drug pricing. Although her campaign emphasizes reducing costs, Buck previously opposed legislative measures intended to decrease prescription drug prices.

Since 2020, Buck has been a member of the Nevada Senate. She now seeks to represent the 1st District, which encompasses areas within Las Vegas and Henderson.

In 2023, Buck stood against Assembly Bill 250. This bill aimed to expand Medicare drug savings to all state residents by implementing federal price caps on essential medications, such as those used for diabetes, heart issues, and autoimmune conditions.

Advocating for the bill, former Lt. Gov. Kate Marshall expressed to the Nevada Independent the necessity of its passage. “People have the right to have access to medication at a reasonable price,” Marshall stated, highlighting the financial strains many face due to inflation and the pandemic.

Despite backing for Assembly Bill 250 in the state legislature, it encountered a veto from Republican Governor Joe Lombardo. There is an intention among Democrats to bring it back for consideration.

Buck, while defending her decision against the bill in 2024, did not provide detailed reasoning. “Anytime you put caps on things, I really worry about the greater impact,” Buck mentioned.

Her opposition extends to the 2021 Inflation Reduction Act, which authorized the federal government to negotiate drug prices, benefiting over 140,000 Nevadans. Buck criticized the act as a “disaster.”

Currently, Buck is up against Democratic Rep. Dina Titus, who has been a proponent of the Inflation Reduction Act, acknowledging its role in reducing healthcare and energy costs. Titus remarked on the significance of the legislation for families.

Endorsement for Buck’s campaign has come from former President Donald Trump, adding a significant boost to her efforts as she challenges the incumbent.
