Brazil Recalls Ambassador Following Argentine President’s Remarks
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken the step of recalling its ambassador to Argentina after inflammatory comments were made by Argentine President Javier Milei during a visit to Brazil. The remarks came during Milei’s participation in an event in Sao Paulo, where he made disparaging statements about Brazilian officials.
President Milei’s visit coincided with the confirmation of Brazilian Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro as the presidential candidate for the party of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. In his speech, Milei referred to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a “thief” and a “delinquent.” He also directed insults at Supreme Federal Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes, whom he called “trash” after being denied a visit to Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for a coup attempt.
Minister Edson Fachin, president of the Supreme Federal Court, expressed disapproval of Milei’s remarks, labeling them a “disrespectful reference to a magistrate of the highest court in the country, made on Brazilian soil.”
Following the incident, a spokesperson for Brazil’s foreign affairs ministry announced that Ambassador Julio Bitelli was summoned back for consultations in response to Milei’s statements.
On social media platform X, former Argentine President Alberto Fernández released a video on Sunday highlighting Milei’s insults. “Milei went to Brazil shouting like a madman, demanding to see a coup plotter in jail,” Fernández wrote. “Insulting the president of a sister nation and our main trading partner is unforgivable.”
Additionally, Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof, who may run in the upcoming general elections, also took to X to express his concern. He reached out to Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to assure that Milei’s comments do not reflect the sentiments of the Argentine populace. Kicillof remarked, “I watched with profound shame as President Milei offended and insulted the Brazilian government, its president, and the entire country.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining respectful relations with Brazil, Argentina’s key trading partner.
Despite the controversy, President Lula has yet to publicly comment on Milei’s remarks. However, in an opinion piece for The Washington Post, he referred to U.S. tariffs against Brazil as “a strategic mistake” and emphasized that Brazil’s future is determined by Brazilians alone, without external influence.
This diplomatic tension arose shortly after Brazil’s Foreign Ministry denied visas to two U.S. State Department officials planning to visit the country, with no explanation provided for the decision. Meanwhile, President Lula is preparing for his reelection campaign, in which he will face Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, who maintains close connections with the Trump administration.
