Arkansas Primaries Set to Shape State’s Political Landscape

On Tuesday, Arkansas voters will head to the polls to select candidates for various federal, state, and local positions. The outcomes of these primaries will determine who will compete in November’s midterm elections. Arkansas, a state that last elected a Democrat to a statewide role in 2010, is currently dominated by Republicans in statewide offices, the U.S. House, and both chambers of the state Legislature.

Among the key races, Republican U.S. Senator Tom Cotton is seeking a third term, facing two challengers in the primary. On the Democratic side, the nomination will go to either Lewisville Mayor Ethan Dunbar or farmer and business owner Hallie Shoffner.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, also a Republican, is running unopposed in the primary for a second term in 2026. Other top state Republicans, including the lieutenant governor, attorney general, auditor, and treasurer, also face no primary opposition.

The Democratic contest to challenge Sanders in November features State Senator Fred Love and Supha Xayprasith-Mays, a magazine publisher who previously ran in 2022 but did not advance past the primary.

Additionally, Arkansas will witness competitive primaries for positions such as secretary of state, commissioner of state lands, two U.S. House districts, and numerous state Senate and House seats. While competitive statewide races are uncommon in Arkansas, past election data shows notable outcomes, such as Senator Cotton being unopposed in previous primaries and Governor Sanders securing a significant majority in 2022.

Pulaski County, encompassing the capital of Little Rock, plays a significant role in Arkansas politics, particularly in Democratic primaries. The area is known for its Democratic lean, as evidenced by Vice President Kamala Harris’s strong performance there in the 2024 presidential election.

Historically, Pulaski County has shown unique voting patterns, such as in the 2016 GOP presidential primary when Marco Rubio secured a decisive share of the vote, albeit not winning the state. This contrasts with Donald Trump’s later success in the county during his 2024 primary campaign against Nikki Haley.

In Arkansas, if no candidate achieves over 50% of the vote in a primary, the top two contenders will proceed to a runoff on March 31. The Associated Press, responsible for announcing election results, will only declare a winner when it is clear that trailing candidates cannot close the gap. In cases of recounts, which are not automatic in Arkansas, candidates can request and fund one, with costs reimbursed if results change.

Key Election Details

Polls will close at 7:30 p.m. local time, equivalent to 8:30 p.m. ET. Voters will decide on candidates for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House Districts 2 and 4, and other key positions. Arkansas law allows voters to register without a party affiliation, and while Democrats permit registered Republicans to vote in their primaries, Republicans have restricted registered Democrats from participating in theirs.

As of the last general election in November 2024, Arkansas had approximately 1.8 million registered voters. The 2022 primaries saw about 348,000 Republican and 94,000 Democratic participants, with a significant portion casting votes ahead of primary day. This year, over 61,000 Democratic and 125,500 Republican ballots have already been submitted.

Vote Counting and Results Release

In the 2022 GOP gubernatorial primary, initial results were reported 15 minutes after polls closed, with the final update of the night at 3:11 a.m. ET, covering 98% of the votes. Historically, early and absentee votes are released first, followed by in-person Election Day results.

The countdown to the 2026 midterm elections stands at 245 days as of Tuesday. For continuous updates on the election, follow the Associated Press’s coverage here.
