Controversy Surrounding Montana’s Congressional Districts
In a recent political discussion, Republican Aaron Flint has been scrutinized for his statements regarding the congressional district boundaries in Montana. His comments have sparked debate about the fairness of the districting process.
Claims of Gerrymandering
During a June 18 appearance on the David Webb Show, Flint argued that the 1st District’s boundaries were configured to benefit Democrats unfairly. Flint, who previously hosted a radio show, is contesting for a seat in this district against Democrat Sam Forstag.
“After the 2020 census, the state got split in two,” Flint stated. “This Western congressional district that I’m running for this year is a battleground district. This race could determine control of the House of Representatives, but the Democrats basically gerrymandered this seat here in western Montana for a time like this.”
Flint echoed this sentiment in a 2023 social media post, claiming that “Dems control redistricting which gave us the gerrymandered districts.”
Fact-Checking the Claims
Contrary to Flint’s assertions, the congressional map currently in use was actually proposed by Republicans. The plan was subsequently approved by the chair of Montana’s bipartisan redistricting commission. This new map emerged following the 2020 census, which led to Montana regaining a second U.S. House seat after nearly 30 years of having just one at-large representative.
Kendra Miller, a Democrat serving on the redistricting commission, conveyed to the Associated Press that the newly created district actually favors Republicans. She noted that it is “not a competitive district in my mind.”
Dan Stusek, a Republican from the commission, expressed being “pleasantly surprised” when the map was sanctioned.
Data supporting Miller’s view shows that Democrats would have secured victories in the district only about 25% of the time if it had existed before 2020.
Current Political Landscape
Despite historical trends, the race between Flint and Forstag remains competitive. A June poll conducted by Impact Research revealed that both candidates are tied, with a significant portion of voters yet to make a decision.
