Indiana’s Defensive Line Bolstered by Court Ruling Ahead of Opener
In an unexpected turn of events, Indiana University’s football team will have two of its key defensive linemen, Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt, available for their season opener against North Texas. This development follows a court decision issued late Friday by Judge Kara Krothe of the Monroe Circuit Court in Bloomington.
The judge’s temporary restraining order prevents the NCAA from barring any of the seven plaintiffs involved in the case from participating in Division I athletics during the 2026-27 season. This decision comes after Daley and Wyatt were previously granted a fifth year of eligibility in a separate court ruling.
Daley, who led the Big Ten with 19 tackles for loss last season, was sidelined from the College Football Playoff due to a knee injury sustained during the Big Ten championship postgame celebration. Wyatt, another crucial player for the team, started the first seven games last season, recording 28 tackles, eight for loss, and 2.5 sacks before also suffering a season-ending knee injury last October.
Although neither Daley nor Wyatt secured a spot in the professional football leagues as undrafted rookies, their eligibility remained uncertain after an Aug. 21 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. This decision had overturned a lower court’s ruling that had previously granted an extra season of eligibility to the high school graduating class of 2022.
Throughout this period of uncertainty, both players continued to practice with the Hoosiers. Coach Curt Cignetti expressed the program’s full support for Daley and Wyatt as they navigated the legal challenges. Indiana has faced similar situations in the past, including that of starting defensive back Louis Moore, who was initially restricted but eventually allowed to play the entire season, significantly contributing to the Hoosiers’ national championship win.
The ongoing legal case in Monroe County also involves former Indiana basketball player Malik Reneau, now at Miami, an Indiana women’s volleyball player, two Hoosiers swimmers, and a Butler University basketball player.
