Debate Over Trump’s Name on Kennedy Center Continues
The ongoing debate over whether to add former President Donald Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center has reached another chapter. According to a recent court filing, Justice Department attorneys argue that omitting Trump’s name could significantly affect fundraising efforts for the center’s renovations, potentially leading to its closure. The attorneys stated that without Trump’s recognition, the “decrepit, dilapidated” cultural venue may have to be “taken down.”
This development follows a court decision in May that halted the initial attempt to add “Donald J. Trump” to the building’s facade. This legal action was initiated by Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, who serves as an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center. The board of trustees, aligned with Trump, recently revisited the proposal, suggesting alternatives like appending “Renovated and Restored By President Donald J. Trump” and possibly renaming the plaza in his honor.
Rep. Beatty has once again sought federal court intervention, arguing that these actions violate the Kennedy Center statute, which prohibits the board from dedicating the center as a memorial to anyone other than John F. Kennedy. A federal judge is set to hear these arguments on Thursday.
The Justice Department’s recent filing painted a dire picture of the Kennedy Center’s condition, describing it as “a financially insolvent facility” in need of urgent renovation. They cautioned that blocking the board’s recognition of Trump could cause donors to withdraw support, halting much-needed structural rehabilitation efforts.
If the center’s deterioration continues, the Justice Department warned, the building might have to be demolished, potentially giving way to an outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River. However, such a replacement would “fail to adequately honor President John F. Kennedy,” according to the attorneys.
Beatty’s attorneys dismissed the latest attempt to incorporate Trump’s name as a “transparent attempt” to achieve the renaming through different means. They urged the court for a definitive ruling to prevent further renaming attempts, calling the situation a “childish gambit.”
Previously, the board of trustees had argued that fundraising would suffer without Trump’s name, but a panel of judges in July found this claim lacking in “specific facts or evidence.”
The Kennedy Center has faced challenges since Trump’s involvement, with reports of canceled performances and declining attendance. This is part of a broader effort by the former administration to leave a lasting mark on the U.S. capital, which included plans for a monumental arch and a “military complex slash ballroom” at the White House.
