Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Discusses Personal Decisions Amid Political Speculations
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced her decision to freeze her eggs, as she considers her future political endeavors leading up to the 2028 presidential election. The New York representative shared her personal choice via Instagram, stating, “This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life.”
While Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent voice among progressive Democrats, did not specify any plans regarding having children, she emphasized the political risks involved in openly discussing her family-related decisions. She addressed these topics further during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” where she mentioned she has not dismissed the possibility of a presidential run or vying for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Chuck Schumer in 2028.
Highlighting her intent to normalize discussions surrounding women’s professional and personal challenges, Ocasio-Cortez also pointed to the policies under President Donald Trump’s administration. She remarked, “In this political environment, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations.”
The Trump administration has been noted for its opposition to abortion rights, with key appointees to the Supreme Court playing a significant role in the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, which had previously secured a constitutional right to abortion. However, in 2025, Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing the costs associated with in vitro fertilization.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion, Ocasio-Cortez sponsored a Democratic bill in 2022 to enshrine abortion rights into federal law, during a time when Democrats controlled the House. Her recent announcement also shed light on the varying standards and scrutiny faced by women, especially in political spheres.
She pointed out the differences in perception between genders, stating, “Men run for office, or frankly they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their minds, ‘OK, this guy’s running for office, how old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?’”
