Independent Candidate Rick Bennett’s Campaign Backed by Republican Donors
Rick Bennett, a current state senator, has launched an independent bid for the governorship of Maine, yet his campaign draws significant support from Republican affiliates, including those connected to former Governor Paul LePage.
Maine’s political landscape has historically been favorable to independent candidates. Notable figures include Angus King, now serving in the U.S. Senate, who governed the state from 1995 to 2003, and Eliot Cutler, who was a close contender in the 2010 gubernatorial race.
Despite his independent candidacy, Bennett’s political roots are firmly Republican, having served as vice chair of the Maine Republican Party between 2013 and 2017. He has actively engaged in state politics under the GOP banner until his recent departure in pursuit of an independent platform.
In his campaign video, Bennett emphasized the need for bipartisan collaboration, stating, “We need leaders who will work with anyone—Republican, Democrat, or independent—to ease the financial pressure on families.”
Financial records reveal significant Republican backing for Bennett’s campaign. The super PAC Maine Wins Together, which primarily supports Bennett, is majorly funded by affluent Republicans.
Among the contributors are Gray and Sandra Bahre, who donated $50,000 to the PAC. They are also known for their financial support of LePage, contributing $14,000 to his congressional campaign, $24,000 to his victory fund, $10,000 to a PAC favoring him, and $15,000 to the Maine Republican Party.
Additionally, Paul Coulombe, a prominent figure in the liquor industry, contributed another $50,000 to Maine Wins Together. Coulombe has a history of supporting Republican initiatives, having donated $160,000 to the state party in 2014 and backing LePage’s unsuccessful 2022 gubernatorial campaign.
LePage, who has described himself as “Donald Trump before Donald Trump,” held the governorship from 2011 to 2019. His tenure was marked by controversial views and remarks. He notably opposed Medicaid expansion, defying a voter-approved mandate.
Bennett’s political journey is intertwined with LePage’s, having campaigned alongside him in 2010 and participated in his transition team. LePage even recommended Bennett for a State Department position during Trump’s presidency.
Moreover, Bennett’s campaign strategy involves consulting services from Election Hive, a Republican firm based in Utah. This firm has previously collaborated with Sen. Mike Lee, recognized by the Institute for Legislative Analysis as the most conservative senator of 2024.
In the upcoming election, Bennett will compete against Democrat Hannah Pingree and Republican Bobby Charles. However, a recent poll by the Siena Research Institute indicates Bennett is lagging with only 8% voter support.
