Supreme Court Denies Bolsonaro’s Request for Milei Visit
SAO PAULO (AP) — A recent decision by a Brazilian Supreme Court justice has denied former President Jair Bolsonaro’s request to be visited at his residence by Argentine President Javier Milei. The visit was scheduled for July 25 in Brasilia.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who presided over the trial that resulted in Bolsonaro’s imprisonment for over 27 years due to a coup attempt, stated that Bolsonaro is prohibited from receiving visits that are “political-electoral” in nature.
Milei’s visit coincides with his attendance at the Liberal Party convention in Sao Paulo. This event will officially nominate Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president’s son, as a candidate to challenge the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in upcoming elections.
The relationship between Lula and Milei remains tense, largely due to Lula’s longstanding alliance with Milei’s political adversaries, including former Argentine presidents Cristina Fernández and Alberto Fernández.
Justice Moraes’ decision is not without precedent. In March, he also denied a visit request from Darren Beattie, a U.S. State Department official and conservative author, who intended to meet Bolsonaro in prison.
