MIAMI (AP) — Watching Lionel Messi shine in the World Cup semifinals left a lasting impression on Giannis Antetokounmpo. Inspired by Messi’s greatness, Antetokounmpo aims to chart a similar path in his basketball career.
Antetokounmpo received a warm Miami welcome on Thursday, experiencing the Heat’s home court for the first time amid cheers from fans. “I need pressure at this time of my career,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to step out of his comfort zone. “I feel like Miami was the place for me to be.”
Messi’s move to Inter Miami three years ago was marked by success, including multiple MVP awards and a championship. Antetokounmpo, now in Miami, hopes for similar achievements. “That’s the blueprint,” he said, referencing sports icons like LeBron James and Cristiano Ronaldo. “It’s hard. You have to be disciplined. You have to be dedicated to your craft, but it’s there.”
His transition to Miami follows a significant trade that brought Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. to the Heat from the Milwaukee Bucks. The trade involved Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakučionis, and draft picks.
The Heat, under Pat Riley’s presidency since 1995, have a history of acquiring superstars, and Riley sees this move as part of their pursuit of excellence. “You don’t win championships unless you have greatness on the court and on the bench,” Riley stated. “I’m just so excited for this challenge.”
Since entering the NBA in 2013, Antetokounmpo has amassed 21,531 points, 8,882 rebounds, and 4,484 assists, placing him among the league’s elite. His ability to draw fouls makes him a formidable opponent, much to the delight of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “Do you want to coach Giannis?” Spoelstra recalled Riley asking him, to which he promptly replied, “Yes.”
Spoelstra looks forward to coaching Antetokounmpo, who prefers honesty in coaching. “I’d rather you tell me the ugly truth than a beautiful lie,” Antetokounmpo expressed. He stands as Milwaukee’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and assists, and he is eager for more success with the Heat.
Portis, reflecting on their move, noted that conversations with Antetokounmpo have always centered around winning. “All he cares about is winning,” Portis said.
Antetokounmpo’s Miami journey began with excitement as he and his wife received a warm welcome upon their arrival. Despite his dislike for South Florida’s iguanas, he appreciates the warmer climate compared to Milwaukee. Riley’s ambition for the team resonated with Antetokounmpo, who is eager to add more championships to his career. “You’ve got to work,” he said. “It’s something that I wanted. I was able to accomplish it once in my career. Hopefully, it will happen a second time.”
