Representative Hinson Absent from Critical House Votes Due to Campaign Fundraising
Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson was notably absent from several crucial votes in the House of Representatives, as she was engaged in fundraising activities for her U.S. Senate campaign.
On June 24, the House Appropriations Committee conducted a series of 11 amendment votes pertaining to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill. This legislation is essential as it dictates the funding for the Pentagon and various defense programs for the upcoming fiscal year. Despite her role on the committee, Hinson missed seven of these important votes.
Details from Grand Valley Consulting, a firm that counsels Republican candidates, reveal that Hinson attended a fundraising lunch event with Senator Shelly Moore Capito from West Virginia on the same day. Entry to this event was priced between $1,000 and $2,500 per ticket.
The progressive media company MidasTouch shared a video online showing Hinson arriving at the event while the votes were still ongoing.
The votes Hinson missed addressed several key national security issues, including military spending allocations, the potential reduction of U.S. troops in Europe, and changes to officer promotion criteria within the military.
This absence has sparked criticism of Hinson for seemingly prioritizing her Senate ambitions over her responsibilities as a congresswoman. Notably, she has yet to hold a single town hall meeting with her constituents this year, despite actively campaigning for her Senate run.
Hinson is currently in the race to succeed the retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst. She will compete against Democratic State Representative Josh Turek in the upcoming general election.
According to a recent New York Times/Siena University poll, Hinson holds a slight 2-point advantage over Turek.
