Suspect in National Guard Shooting Hospitalized Amid Health Concerns
In Washington, a man facing charges for a fatal shooting near the White House has been hospitalized due to serious health concerns. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is accused of shooting two National Guard troops, resulting in the death of one and serious injury to another.
According to prosecutors, Lakanwal was admitted to a hospital after refusing to eat while in pretrial detention, posing a significant threat to his health. The Justice Department indicated that his condition had become life-threatening, with the U.S. Marshals Service previously warning of potential long-term consequences if his nutritional intake did not improve.
The legal proceedings saw an emergency hearing convened by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta to address Lakanwal’s medical condition. The judge requested that prosecutors draft an order to gain access to Lakanwal’s recent medical records. Both the defense attorney, Shelli Peterson, and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office chose not to comment following the hearing.
Background on the Case
Lakanwal, a native of Afghanistan, faces multiple charges including first-degree murder. The charges stem from a November 2025 incident where West Virginia National Guard Spc. Sarah Beckstrom was killed and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe was critically injured.
The troops were part of an increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C., initiated by President Donald Trump. The attack occurred as they were stationed near a subway entrance close to the White House. Lakanwal allegedly traveled from Bellingham, Washington, with a stolen gun and attacked the soldiers, according to police reports.
During the attack, he reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” while firing, and was subsequently shot in the encounter. Lakanwal’s initial court appearance was conducted remotely from a hospital bed, and a trial date has not yet been set.
