Novak Djokovic has once again etched his name in tennis history, achieving a new milestone at Wimbledon. On Sunday, Djokovic secured his 106th match victory at the prestigious tournament, overtaking Roger Federer to set a new men’s record for the most wins at the All England Club. Despite this achievement, Djokovic remains focused on other goals, notably equaling Federer’s eight Wimbledon titles and setting a new record of 25 major trophies.
The Serbian tennis star faced a challenging opponent in Roman Safiullin, a 132nd-ranked qualifier, before winning 7-6 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. This victory leads him to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the 17th time, just one short of Federer’s record. However, Djokovic admitted that he needs to elevate his performance as the tournament progresses.
Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic described his experience at Wimbledon so far as one of survival, expressing hope that his best is yet to come. “Survive to thrive, that’s how I feel,” he remarked.
Throughout the match, Djokovic experienced moments of frustration, including saving two set points in the first set and receiving a warning for an apparent outburst in Serbian. His emotions spilled over as the crowd reacted to him hitting the ball away in annoyance after losing the third set. Following the match, Djokovic apologized, referring to his actions as “meltdowns.”
Adapting his strategy, Djokovic chose to engage more at the net, a departure from his usual baseline play, due to Safiullin’s strength in rallies. “I had to mix things up. And it worked,” Djokovic explained.
Auger-Aliassime Advances After Thrilling Match
Next up for Djokovic is a quarterfinal clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime, the tournament’s third seed. Auger-Aliassime emerged victorious in a gripping five-set match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, which captivated spectators with its intensity and skillful play.
The Canadian won with scores of 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1, overcoming a break in the fourth set despite Davidovich Fokina suffering an ankle injury. Reflecting on the match, Auger-Aliassime called it one of the most exciting of his career, stating, “It was a crazy match.”
A particularly memorable rally left the crowd in awe, featuring Davidovich Fokina’s impressive defense and Auger-Aliassime’s missed opportunity, which led to laughter even in the heat of the moment. “In my head, I was thinking, ‘This is too good,'” Auger-Aliassime said, acknowledging the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction.
