A majority of Americans believe skepticism and independent verification are important traits of responsible news consumers, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center.
When asked what it means to be a “good news consumer,” 20% of respondents said people should not automatically believe the information they encounter. Another 12% said responsible consumers should fact-check claims by consulting multiple sources, conducting independent research and verifying information before accepting it as true.
Overall, 82% of Americans reported that they at least sometimes conduct their own research to determine whether news information is accurate.
The findings may resonate with military veterans, who often receive training on the importance of evaluating information and making decisions based on reliable intelligence. In military operations, inaccurate or incomplete information can have serious consequences, making verification a critical part of the decision-making process.
The Pew study also found that 13% of respondents said people should rely on reputable news organizations that prioritize accuracy. Another 10% said it is important to seek information from a variety of sources rather than relying on a single outlet or viewpoint.
Researchers noted that Americans are increasingly exposed to information from a mix of traditional media, social media platforms, online personalities and independent content creators. As a result, distinguishing between verified reporting, opinion and misinformation can be challenging.
One of the study’s more notable findings was that only 4% of respondents specifically mentioned avoiding the sharing of false information as part of being a responsible news consumer.
Veteran advocates say the habits of evaluating sources, seeking corroborating evidence and avoiding snap judgments remain as important in civilian life as they are in military service. Those practices can help individuals navigate a complex information environment and reduce the influence of misleading or inaccurate claims.
The study suggests that Americans continue to place a high value on critical thinking, source verification and media literacy as tools for making informed decisions and staying engaged with their communities.
