Director-actor Rob Reiner and Wife Found Dead in Los Angeles Home
LOS ANGELES — The bodies of Rob Reiner, the acclaimed director and actor, and his wife, Michele, were discovered on Sunday in a Los Angeles residence owned by Reiner, according to a law enforcement official. The official, who requested anonymity, revealed that the couple appeared to have sustained stab wounds, and a family member is currently being questioned by authorities.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call at approximately 3:30 p.m. and found the 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman deceased inside the home. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division is investigating what they describe as an “apparent homicide,” stated Capt. Mike Bland.
The identities of the deceased have not been officially confirmed by Los Angeles authorities. The residence is located in Brentwood, an upscale neighborhood in the city’s west side known for its celebrity inhabitants.
Rob Reiner, who celebrated his 78th birthday in March, was a prominent figure in Hollywood, known for directing iconic films such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “The Princess Bride.” He gained fame for his role as Meathead in the 1970s television series “All in the Family,” earning two Emmy Awards.
In response to the tragic news, relatives of the late Norman Lear, a legendary producer who passed away in 2023, expressed their sorrow. “Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” stated the Lear family. “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged Reiner’s impact on the city and the nation, saying, “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”
Rob Reiner, son of the comedy legend Carl Reiner, was married to Michele Singer Reiner since 1989. The couple met during the production of “When Harry Met Sally” and shared three children. Reiner was previously married to Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner passed away in 2020 at age 98, and Penny Marshall died in 2018.
Homicides are uncommon in Brentwood. The area is notably close to the site of the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
