Michigan Rep. Tom Barrett Hosts Roundtable Featuring Prominent GOP Donor
A recent event hosted by Michigan Representative Tom Barrett aimed to discuss the benefits of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act among small business owners. However, it featured notable figures such as a prolific Republican donor and campaign consultant, raising questions about the nature of the attendee list.
The August 20 roundtable was advertised as a forum for “small business owners from across the community” to discuss the Republican budget signed into law by President Donald Trump on July 4.
Barrett highlighted the event’s significance on social media, stating, “We are taking historic action to protect our small businesses, cut costs for working families, and give a much needed boost to Michigan’s economy.” He also shared images of the gathering, which included Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler.
Among the attendees was Scott Greenlee, founder of Greenlee Consulting in Grand Rapids. Barrett acknowledged the presence of Greenlee Consulting as a participating small business in a post on X.
Greenlee, a seasoned political strategist, has been involved in Michigan’s Republican campaigns, providing $200,000 worth of advisory services since 2010. His firm’s contributions are noted in campaign finance records as “consulting” and “consulting on robocalls.” This includes advising far-right gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon.
In addition, Greenlee has personally contributed to several Republican candidates, including a donation of $1,916.10 to Barrett this year alone.
Greenlee also manages the Patriots Fund, a political action committee based in Michigan. Notably, Barrett is the sole candidate for 2026 endorsed by this committee.
While the One Big Beautiful Bill Act proposes tax reductions for small businesses, there is concern that such benefits might be negated by increasing costs and tariffs. The Detroit Regional Chamber noted that approximately 242,000 small businesses import goods annually and are already facing challenges with rising expenses and unpredictability.
Barrett, who represents Michigan’s 7th District, including much of Lansing, is seeking a second term. He is perceived as one of the more vulnerable Republican incumbents in the upcoming election cycle.
