State Ballot Initiatives in 2024: Mixed Outcomes Across the US
The 2024 election cycle saw a range of pivotal initiatives placed on state ballots, with outcomes reflecting the diverse political landscape across the United States. Notably, abortion rights initiatives succeeded in traditionally conservative states such as Missouri and Montana, yet faced defeat in other conservative regions like Florida, South Dakota, and Nebraska. In Ohio, voters rejected a proposal aimed at eliminating partisan gerrymandering, contrasting with past successes of similar initiatives in states such as Arizona, Michigan, and California.
Various factors influenced these differing results. For instance, Florida’s requirement of a 60 percent supermajority for constitutional amendments played a significant role. In Missouri, the process involves the drafting of a description by the secretary of state once a citizen initiative qualifies for the ballot. Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, who openly opposes abortion, crafted a contentious description for the state’s abortion rights initiative. His description misleadingly claimed that the initiative would permit “dangerous, unregulated, and unrestricted abortions, from conception to live birth, without requiring a medical license or potentially being subject to medical malpractice.” As a result, supporters of the initiative filed a lawsuit.
