NORTHEAST HARBOR, Maine — The election of Donald Trump as president has brought renewed focus on Leonard Leo, a prominent figure in advancing conservative causes in the United States. Leo, who played a pivotal role in appointing three conservative Supreme Court justices during Trump’s term, resides on Mount Desert Island, Maine, where his presence has stirred mixed reactions among residents.

While Leo’s efforts have made him a celebrated figure among conservatives, his move to the otherwise tranquil island community in 2020 has not gone unnoticed. Despite his significant contributions to local charities, his presence has sparked controversy and protests, especially after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion in 2022.

Local Protests Against Leo

Caroline Pryor, an island resident, expressed concerns about Leo’s influence, stating, “He comes to a small quiet community… and does this evil, far-reaching work.” These sentiments were echoed during a protest held outside Leo’s estate during the island’s annual marathon, where demonstrators showcased their disapproval with slogans and music.

Leo responded to the protests by expressing his disagreement with their views but acknowledged their right to protest, stating, “They are people created by God with dignity and worth.”

Controversial Donations

Leo’s charitable donations have fueled further debate. His contributions to local nonprofits, including over $50,000 to the Island Housing Trust, have been met with suspicion. Some residents, like Susan Covino Buell, view these donations as an attempt to gain acceptance, leading her to resign from a nonprofit campaign committee in protest.

Mariah Cormier, a spokesperson for a local hospital that received donations from Leo, stated the institution accepts donations that “aid in strengthening the health and vibrancy of our community.”

Leo’s influence extends beyond philanthropy. Sacred Spaces Foundation, a nonprofit he leads, purchased a local church, affecting its congregation dynamics. His presence at another parish has reportedly driven some members away.

Divided Community Response

While many residents oppose Leo’s political influence, there are those who defend his right to live in the community. Republican leaders in the state have commended Leo for his steadfast beliefs and contributions to conservative causes.

Despite ongoing protests, Leo remains a fixture on Mount Desert Island, continuing his philanthropic activities while facing persistent opposition from local activists. The protests, while failing to drive him away, have highlighted the tension between local values and his conservative agenda.
