Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s Campaign Spending Under Scrutiny
Republican Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer has come under scrutiny for using nearly $50,000 of campaign funds on luxury accommodations and transportation. This financial activity adds another layer to the ongoing debate regarding her residency outside the district she represents.
Elected in 2022, Chavez-DeRemer serves Oregon’s 5th district and is currently seeking re-election. Campaign finance reports reveal that between February 2023 and May 2024, she allocated $43,800 to stays at 30 high-end hotels, including two Marriott properties in Washington D.C.
Other notable accommodations included The Ritz-Carlton in Miami, FL, and the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. The campaign did not provide a comprehensive list of all hotel locations involved.
From December 2023 to May 2024, Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign spent $6,090 on private transportation, primarily in Washington D.C. and its environs. This included a $731.50 expenditure at Snow Country Limousine in Park City, UT, coinciding with her stay at the St. Regis Resort in Deer Valley, UT, known for its ski facilities and fine dining.
While campaign finance laws permit the use of funds for travel and related expenses, they mandate that such expenses must be justified as reasonable and necessary.
Chavez-DeRemer, who declared a net worth of $14.8 million, resides with her husband in Happy Valley, OR. Notably, the U.S. House of Representatives’ tool for identifying representatives shows her living in District 3, represented by Democrat Earl Blumenauer.
The question of her residency arose during her initial run for Congress in 2022. Despite initially suggesting she would relocate following the finalization of congressional maps, she later stated she had no intention of moving to District 5.
Oregon law does not mandate that representatives reside within the districts they serve.
Chavez-DeRemer’s Democratic challenger is State Representative Janelle Bynum. Requests for comments from Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign spokesperson went unanswered.
