As the countdown to election day begins, veterans and their families across the U.S. are joining a powerful initiative, Vet the Vote, to serve as poll workers in a nonpartisan effort to protect the electoral process. With over 161,000 veterans already signed up this year, the organization seeks to ensure that America’s elections are secure, fair, and transparent.

Through Vet the Vote, veterans bring their firsthand experience of protecting democracy to the electoral process, demonstrating commitment to the nation that goes beyond politics. This year, thousands of veterans are stepping up as poll workers, an essential role that involves tasks like setting up voting equipment, verifying voter IDs, and assisting at polling locations.

Veterans’ skills in discipline and leadership have proven valuable in managing polling stations, which can sometimes become tense. Since 2020, election officials have heightened security measures for poll workers, with a recent survey revealing that 38 percent of local election officials have faced threats or harassment while on the job. To counter this, more than 90 percent of jurisdictions have implemented increased security, with states like Arizona conducting active shooter drills specifically for election workers.

Vet the Vote stands as a unifying force, with veterans from both sides of the political spectrum coming together for the shared mission of supporting democracy. Poll workers are required to undergo training in most states, and many are also asked to take an oath to prevent fraud and maintain election integrity. By serving as poll workers, veterans are continuing to defend the values they fought for, ensuring fair elections for all.
